MIP IP Stars 2022 individual rankings out – recognition for five Boco IP professionals

Managing Intellectual Property (MIP) recently published its IP Stars ranking of individuals in the IP field for 2022. IP Stars is one of the world’s leading specialist guides to IP law firms and practitioners. Boco IP was recently ranked as a Tier 1 firm in Managing IP 2022 IP Stars for trademark prosecution in Finland.

Background information about the IP Stars survey

IP STARS is the leading resource for companies or individuals looking for experienced legal practitioners for contentious and non-contentious IP advice around the world. The research for IP STARS covers a variety of IP practice areas and more than 70 jurisdictions, making it the most comprehensive and widely respected IP guide in the legal profession. The aspects assessed for the firm rankings include expertise, workload, market reputation, track record, outcomes achieved for clients as well as unique strengths in a given practice area. Judgements about which firms to include in the rankings, and which tier and practice area they should be in, take account of all this information. The data from the IP STARS research is also used for the Managing IP awards.

IP STARS is an exclusive rankings publication; they do not rank all firms and individuals offering IP services. There is no fee to pay or cost to participate in the research, firms and individuals are chosen based on merit through a rigorous and impartial research process and cannot buy entry into this award body. Participation in the research does also not guarantee ranking.

The rankings are based on the review submitted by firms, publicly available information as well as market feedback. The companies being ranked do not know which clients have been contacted or what their assessment has been.

Top Tier Firm 2022

On 1 April 2022, Boco IP will move to new future premises in Kamppi, where a unique innovation centre has been renovated and is now ready.

The project was carried out in collaboration with CAPMAN and Innovation Home. Our magnificent new premises are located in the heart of Helsinki on Kansakoulukatu 3. You are most welcome to meet us in either Kamppi or Tampere. It would be nice to see you face-to-face, pop in for a cup of coffee.

Boco IP ranked a Tier 1 firm in IP Stars 2022 in Trademark Prosecution!

We are honored and very pleased to announce that for the first time ever, our firm is appraised as a Tier 1 firm in IP Stars for trademark prosecution in Finland.

We could not be happier to announce that Boco IP has moved to Tier 1 category in the new IP Stars rankings 2022 published this week. We are delighted that our work has been noted so well in the international rankings once again this year.

WTR 1000 rankings for year 2022 have been published: Boco IP is also this year recommended as a leading firm for protecting trademarks. Professionals Peter Åkerlund, Laura Roselius, Elina Heikkilä and Pamela Lönnqvist are specifically mentioned in the research report.

World Trademark Review (WTR 1000) rankings for 2022 have just been published and there is a lot to celebrate as Boco IP is again ranked as one of the leading trademark firms in Finland.

Karri Leskinen and Jonna Sahlin ranked best of the best in IAM Global Leaders 2022 list

IAM Global Leaders list ranks the world’s top private patent practice experts. As per the IAM Global Leaders announcement “To be considered to be included in the guide, individuals must be ranked in the gold tier of the Patent 1000 – the market-leading annual directory that identifies the top law and attorney firms and individuals in the world’s most important patent jurisdictions.”

IAM made a survey among the elite patent professionals globally and we would not be prouder that two of our distinguished patent professionals, Karri Leskinen and Jonna Sahlin, were listed in the highly esteemed group of IAM Global Leaders 2022. The criteria for the list are that this small group of merited patent professional has expertise and experience related to creating, protecting, managing, transacting and enforcing critical patent rights and they are able to innovate, inspire and go above and beyond delivering value to clients.

Karri Leskinen and Jonna Sahlin

Managing Director Karri Leskinen (partner) runs the company and actively participates in drafting and implementing the customers’ IPR strategies. He handles both Finnish and international patent applications in the field of chemistry, specializing in inventions related to food and process industries. In addition, Karri lectures, acts as an expert in patent litigation cases, gives statements and advises on patent rights in general. He has a wide-ranging experience in working as a patent attorney and he is a qualified European Patent Attorney. 

Chairman of the board Jonna Sahlin (partner) consults customers on matters relating to intellectual property rights and IPR strategy, especially in the fields of chemistry relating to biochemicals, biofuels and diagnostics. She is a European Patent Attorney and a Registered Patent Attorney in Finland and handles the patenting of inventions both in Finland and internationally. Jonna also conducts freedom-to-operate analyses, gives statements on the interpretation of patents and handles opposition cases.

We are happy to share the news that Nina Virolainen has joined our Chemistry and Biotechnology team

Nina Virolainen has joined our Chemistry and Biotechnology team as a Patent Agent. Nina has a PhD in biotechnology, and before joining us she worked at another Finnish IPR office. Her own patent protected inventions inspired Nina to pursue a career in IPR.

Before her patent attorney career, Nina developed and deployed bio- and environmental engineering solutions, processes and projects. Nina’s strongest expertise is in IPR protection for biotechnology, bioenergy and cleantech applications, processes and solutions. Her technology expertise also extends to diagnostics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, immunochemistry, and process chemistry.

Nina also helps our clients with employee’s inventions, freedom to operate searches and novelty assessments. Nina works with our clients in the fields of biotechnology, chemistry, energy, natural sciences, health, technology, natural resources, pharmaceutical and renewable energy with strong proficiency.

We are very delighted to announce and welcome a new Boco IP team member Saoussen Merdes.

Saoussen will strengthen our Physics and Electricity team as a Trainee Patent Attorney.

She has more than 15 years of experience in R&D and education.  She previously carried out research in universities and research institutes in Japan and Germany, as well as in a nanotechnology company in Finland, where she worked on various photovoltaic and nanotechnology topics.

She joins the Physics and Electricity team at Boco IP to advise our clients and help them to obtain patent protection for their high-tech inventions.

Saoussen is fluent in English, French and Arabic and speaks German with professional working proficiency. She also speaks basic Japanese, Swedish and Finnish.

Tomi Salter and Michael Nielsen have been once again recognized as Rising Stars

Boco IP is proud to announce that European Patent Attorneys Tomi Salter and Michael Nielsen have been once again recognized as Rising Stars in the 2021 edition of Managing IP’s IP Stars.

European Patent Attorney Michael Nielsen works across a wide range of mechanical, electrical/electronic and engineering fields, with particular emphasis on computer-implemented and software-related inventions, including AI and machine learning. He acts as Chartered Patent Attorney in the United Kingdom and also as a European Patent Attorney. Michael has experience handling patents across their whole life cycle, from preparing new applications to handling post-grant opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office. Michael is also a European Design Attorney, handling design matters before the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Before joining Boco IP, Michael trained and worked at an IP law firm in London for several years.

European Patent Attorney Tomi Salter handles patenting of mechanical inventions. In addition, his assignments include preparing utility model applications, handling invalidation proceedings of utility model registrations, and conducting novelty and database searches. Salter has worked as a research assistant alongside with his studies and as a planning trainee in an engineer agency. He has been active in the patenting field since 2010. Tomi is a European Patent Attorney and acts as a Registered Patent Attorney in Finland.

IAM Patent 1000 2021: Gold for Boco IP

Boco IP has once again been ranked in the top tier in IAM Patent 1000’s 2021 rankings. Seven of our partners and attorneys have been individually recognised in the ranking, which highlights Boco IP’s position as “the number one firm in Finland for prosecution work ”.

The firm, one of only two in Finland ranked in the top tier for patent prosecution , is recognised for “consistently delivering top-quality work and excellent customer service” and the “diversity of its talent base”. The editorial acknowledges that the past 12 months have seen new clients come on board, an increase in opposition and appeal work at both the local and European level, and a slew of new instructions from attorneys at law seeking the assistance of technical experts in court proceedings.

She is ”exceptionally talented at drafting applications, she understands the core technical ideas, formulates a well-planned claim and is always extremely diligent and insightful in her work”. Last but not least, Marja Liisa Autti is a “telecommunications and computer-implemented inventions maestro”. She is “a discerning choice for strategic R&D matters”.

The newest member of our team, Sini-Maaria Mikkilä, is also recognised in the editorial for another Finnish firm, from which she recently joined Boco IP. Sini-Maaria “defines complex technical concepts clearly and concisely, resulting in solid patent protection and the potential for strong arguments in opposition proceedings”. She is “a big-picture thinker and her honest opinions keep businesses on track”.
