International Patent Applications
By the international PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) system, as it is called, patent can be applied for in several (over 140) countries by one joint application. The application is usually filed with the Finnish patent office, and it may even be filed in Finnish provided that an English translation is submitted to the officials afterwards.
In the PCT system, the filing of the final national applications may be postponed for up to one and a half years. However, a PCT application does not lead to a patent in any country as such, but a separate application shall be filed with the national or regional office of each selected country.
